Perfect School

Jonah:

I studied her face before I reached to take the towel from her retracted hand. As much training as she had, she had never done this. I glanced at the body, then scrubbed my hands with the damp towel. I dropped it to the floor then wet another towel to wipe my face and arms, sure some of the splatter from her cough had marked me. After I had cleaned myself, I wiped my shoe and the print on the floor. Once I finished I looked to Kira again.

“This kill doesn't mark me, Kira. It's simply a hash mark to be followed by many more. Nothing symbolic about it.” I said coolly. “Now will you let me touch the body, so I can keep the blood from getting everywhere?” I asked.

I stayed in a crouch watching him through narrowed eyes. His hands, his arms and face, shoes, prints, everything. His tone made me snort and shake my head. "No. She's dead Jonah. The dead are gone and what lies on the floor is nothing more than a pile of meat and bones. The blood will spread. It will be cleaned up later. You will sit there and not move or I will make you sit there." I stared right into his as I stated it.

Jonah:

I crossed my arms and looked at her with narrowed eyes. I wanted things to be clean and orderly for when the teachers arrived, and she was thwarting me. I could see her reasoning, but it annoyed me all the same. I did as she ordered, knowing every detail would make it back to Marie.

The teachers arrived shortly with Kyra. They took Kira and I separately to the office for questioning.


Kyra:

I was upset but doing my best to conceal it. Emily had been my friend, and while I had not been behind her with how she had acted, I didn't think she deserved what she got. And I was uneasy about Jonah. The teachers brought Kira and I in for questioning at the same time.

Once I was sure he wouldn't be attempting to touch the body I stood and waited with eyes on the door. I glanced over Kyra as we were escorted to the office with Jonah but I didn't say a single word. My mind was elsewhere, trying to get everything prepared in my head to report.

When Kyra and I were brought in for questioning at the same time I had a hand in my pocket around my phone, glad I had thought to grab it before the training.

Kyra:

They had us sitting together but they questioned me first. I told them about how Jonah had confronted Dayo, and that it had upset Emily. I had tried to cam her down but she was furious, at one point even saying that she was going to kill Jonah, I had taken that as exaggeration. Then I told them how she had shouted at Jonah and Kira and then picked up the knife.

“Then it was in self defense?” the inquisitor asked. I hesitated. I had seen the surprise on Emily's face, I myself had been equally surprised. Jonah could have effortlessly deflected the strike, and he hadn't even flinched. He knew exactly what he was doing.

“She attacked him.” I said, struggling with the answer. I looked to Kira for help.

"Kyra, answer as you saw and believe."  I replied, knowing she was seeking my help.  "Keep to the facts first, opinions second."  I didn't even look at her, instead staring disinterestedly at the ceiling.  When the questions would come to me, I'd have answers.  Doing Kyra and I together seemed a waste.

Kyra:

I looked down a my lap. “Emily did attack him, she was angry and she did try to cut him.” I answered. “And I suppose he acted accordingly.” I did not wish to get him into trouble, no matter my feelings toward him.

“Very well, Kira? What did you see?” They turned to ask her.

"You seem surprised something happened. Why is that?" I asked them finally settling the same disinterested and cold expression it had grown while listening to them talk to Kyra.

“Kira, are you aware of the rules here? Brutality against fellow students is not permitted. In the classrooms we teach it, but it is not to be executed on your classmates. Organizations, and families send their best pupils here, with the understanding that it is a relatively safe learning environment. We have to take this matter seriously for the integrity of this school.

This is not a place to brew murderers. It is meant to train children in their future profession. If Jonah is a danger to the other students, he can not be permitted to stay here. Imagine if you had been the one killed, and we faced retribution from your patron.” They lectured.

"We train to be killers. This event was an inevitability and you should have contingencies in place to prevent this. You take teens and kids full of hormones and emotions and then give them the tools to kill each other and the knowledge to know how with only base guidelines and rules to prevent us from acting against each other." I stated flatly and continued without giving them pause to speak, "Not only that you within the same breath have us fight each other in competitions where we get hurt and can kill each other. Kyra and I could kill the three of you each with a single blow."

Slowly I pulled my phone from my pocket. "You still seem surprised this has happened. Worried that this will come down upon your heads. Perhaps it will. Perhaps it wont. This place should be described as neutral ground. Mistakes happen. This however is your failure in that you didn't do anything to prevent a volatile situation the second you heard mention of it. And Jonah wasn't quiet at all within the cafeteria."

Taking up the phone I pushed the speed dial and held it to my ear. "There is a saying somewhere about the student learning from the teacher and the teacher learning from the student. I don't know the exact quote, but here is your chance to learn about crisis management." I turned my gaze away from them as the phone answered within the first ring. "We have a problem. and Jonah needs assistance."

Kyra:

I had a deep frown while she spoke. She was right. Something should have been done to prevent it, and that wasn't on us. The teachers were silent as they stared at Kira then two of them got together to speak among themselves. They weren't the head's of the school, I assumed they were speaking to Jonah right now.

One of the teachers left the room as Kira took her call.

I listened to the other end as someone spoke and then I nodded. "I'll leave it to you to handle then." I disconnected the call and set the phone down on the table. "I've done my end of the work on Jonah's behalf and I know my patron has picked him up as well. That leaves you to scramble as you will to save your hides if you believe it needs it." With a shrug I turned to Kyra and motioned with my head. "We should be going. They have a lot to talk about now."

Kyra:

I was a little startled at her being so forward without waiting on the teachers to dismiss us. But I got up with her. With a nod from inquisitor I followed her out of the room.

"Kyra will you do me a favor? Find Paublo and your brother and meet me....in the armory. We need to talk." I asked while pausing at the door to the hallway.

Kyra:

I hesitated, hovering next to her. “What about Jonah?” I asked. I didn't know what they would do to them, but it felt odd that he wouldn't be leading the meeting, though Kira was doing a pretty good job with the orders.

"I'll see what I can do." I replied softly then carefully nudged her out the door. It was as sympathetic as I could get, but I knew we'd need to get moving on such things.
