Body Guard

Both brows raised as I looked at her. Her tone was....excessive for the conversation. "Blonde isn't my favorite hair color." Reaching over I placed my fingers over her glass, unable to get a good grip but still trying to take the glass from her, "I think you've had enough."

Julie:
I felt his hands reaching for my glass and I turned my body to avoid him. "Well then what is your favorite hair color?" I asked. I felt his hands get a flimsy grip on the glass and before I could get a better hold, it slipped from my fingers and the small amount that was left, spilled on my t-shirt. I quickly righted the glass but the damage was done. I couldn't help but compare the situation to the last time we drank together.

"Brunette. Or a darker red hea-shit." I started to answer her but cursed when I saw I'd just managed to spill her drink completely. Leaning forward I grabbed from a pile of napkins laying on the coffeetable, and without thinking pressed them against the spill on her shirt.

Julie:

It really wasn't that big of a spill and the napkins weren't helpful so I grabbed his hand to stop him. "This time, it was definitely your fault," I said softly, looking up at him. I could tell myself that it was because of the similarities to the last time we kissed that my eyes dropped down to his mouth, but I knew it was more than that.

I stopped with her touch and looked up at her. A small laugh escaped me. It felt like it had been years since the time she spilled my drink over me. The very memory stirred something in my chest. I searched her face for a moment and when her eyes dipped away from mine I noticed how close we were. How close we had been then...

Julie:

I wanted to kiss him. I wanted him to kiss me. But I didn't move. I remembered the last time, I remembered him pulling away and pretending it never happened. There was no contractual obligation anymore, but that didn't mean he suddenly felt what I felt. I bit my lip and looked down at our hands, still pressed against my shirt. "Um... I should...change." I finally mumbled.

Things felt frozen for a moment. I barely dared breath as I teetered on the edge of giving into the moment. When I had kissed her I had broken the rules. I had broken my contract. But it had been something I had wanted to do for years. She had been and still was my crush.

The choice was removed from before me when she looked away. The spell was broken and I pulled back. "Right...sorry..."

Julie:

I dropped his hand and took a deep breath. I set the empty glass on the table and stood up. "I'll be right back," I told him, not really looking in his direction and practically ran into my room. I closed the door and leaned against it for a moment, trying to get myself under control.

With shaky heads, I changed into a new t-shirt and tried not to think about how close his lips had been.

Settling back where I was I stared at the television screen. I didn't even notice what was happening in the movie. My mind was in another place, my heart hammering in my chest. "I messed up again." I murmured to no one.

Taking up my glass I drained the rest of it just like she had earlier. Setting it aside I rubbed my face and tried to get my mind back in the moment, to focus on the movie, the dull ache in my back, the burning warmth spreading from my stomach. Anything than kissing her.

Julie:
When my shirt was changed and my breathing was under control, I stepped back out of the room and glanced at his to see his eyes focused on the movie. I wanted to pour myself another drink, but I didn't think it would be a very good idea. I was already more than tipsy.

I sat down on my side of the couch and tried to keep an unsuspicious distance between us. Too far away and he would know I was fidgety and too close would be weird. "Did I miss anything?" I asked, glancing at him again.

"To be honest, I completely lost the plot and we've watched this movie half a dozen times." I narrowed my eyes on the screen. "You missed the bad guy tossing the good guy out the window. That's about it." Settling deeper with a soft pained grunt I glanced at her. She seemed...fine. Better than how I felt I was doing.

Julie:

I nodded once at his answer and tried to focus on the rest of the movie. My eyes kept drifting back to his profile without my giving them permission to and it was difficult for me to focus on the rest of the movie. When it was finally over, I sighed and sat up. I grabbed my empty glass off the table and the bottle of alcohol and stood up to put them away. I should probably just dump the rest of the bottle, since clearly nothing good happens when I drink.

"Do you wanna watch another one?" I asked, putting the bottle away and setting the glass in the sink.

I watched her put away the alcohol before looking at the screen again. "Um. Yeah why not. But that will have to be the last one. Also we missed dinner time, should probably see if Lucy minds making something real quick."

I glanced at my watch with a wince. I hadn't realized I was starving until I knew the time. I'd skipped lunch to do my physical therapy. Now it was past dinner time. Top it all off with a tiny breakfast of an apple and coffee. It was a wonder my stomach hadn't voiced it's complaints sooner.

Julie:

I frowned at his reminder of dinner and cursed. I was supposed to be helping him and forgetting a meal wasn't exactly helpful.

"Sorry. I guess the alcohol filled me up and I totally forgot about eating anything," I said, feeling bad as I pulled out my phone to text Lucy. She replied quickly that she would make us a few sandwiches and have them sent up before she left for the day.

"Lucy is making you a sandwich," I told him as I sat back down on the couch. "Your doctor is gonna hate me. First I give you alcohol, then I forget to feed you..." I shook my head. And then I almost maul you on the couch...

"Pretty sure my doctor wont hate you. Well. He might frown on the alcohol. But I'm supposed to be trying to do more on my own. Hard to do that if you are always doing it for me or looking out for me. So you've been doing just fine so far Jules." I promised with a faint smile. "Was my fault. Not yours."

I gestured towards the TV, "Now next movie. Something funny if you don't mind."

Julie:
I got up again and look for a funny movie and shook my head. "You've been doing pretty much everything on your own. I haven't helped you since the first day," I said as I picked something I thought he might like.

I popped the movie into the DVD player and started it.

"Do you want something else to drink?" I asked. "I'm going to get water. The last thing I need tomorrow is a hangover," I said with a wince.

"Water would be good yeah. Or maybe some tea if we have any of the good stuff left. I don't like green tea and we had an entire box of it last I checked." Running my fingers through my hair I tried to think back on what the last tea had been. "The chamomile with honey I think it was."

Julie:
I nodded and made my way to the little kitchen, "You just have to wait for the water to heat up then," I told him, grabbing the kettle from the cabinet. I filled it with water and set it on the stove to heat up. Then I grabbed myself a water bottle from the fridge.

"I'm sure it will be ready by the time we get the sandwiches." Adjusting a few of the pillows to make myself more comfortable I tried to focus on the movie. I could feel the drink starting to hit me. I wasn't a lightweight but the pain meds and alcohol were doing a number on me.

Julie:
I settled in to watch the movie, but if I was being honest, I wasn't paying any attention to it. I was grateful when there was a knock at the door, so I could get up.

I opened the door and grabbed the tray with sandwiches and chips and thanked the guy who brought it up. I set that on the table in front of the couch and went to go finish off the tea for Cody.

The water was steaming hot so I poured it into a mug and got the tea packet he liked and dipped it in before carrying it over to him.

Cody:

With a smile I thanked her for getting me the tea, already a couple bites into my sandwich. The tea was set aside, I preferred waiting for it to get stronger before even considering to take a sip. Sadly that usually meant I drank my tea's room temperature.

"You didn't miss much. The main guy tripped down a flight of stairs and broke a vase. Now he's trying to hide it." I gestured to the screen then took another big bite.

Julie:
I couldn't even remember the parts leading up to the main character falling down the stairs so the information did no good to me. I nodded anyway and took a bite of my sandwich before pushing the plate away. I hadn't remembered dinner because I really wasn't that hungry. I could blame it on nerves for tomorrow, or the alcohol, but I knew what it was really about.

It wasn't hard to guess the source of my sleepiness. Alcohol, pain meds, and now a full stomach. Still I tried to focus on the movie. Leaning forward I set down the plate on the table and without meaning too when I settled back down I set my hand atop hers.

Julie:
My eyes darted to our hands and I waited a beat to see if he would move it. When he didn't, I glanced up at him and very deliberately turned my hand around to lace our fingers together.

I couldn't help myself. The movie was forgotten. I just couldnt' keep my eyes open anymore and while I did enjoy having her hand in mine I was too far gone to pay it much mind. My body no longer actively being supported slumped sideways a bit until I was settled against her, head on her shoulder.
