The central character of the story, a sketch artist known simply as "The Artist" wakes up one day and kisses his lover awake only to find his Annabel, dead, lying next to him. Heartbroken and terrified, he buries her in his basement and flees. He wanders aimlessly (and sinking further and further into insanity) until he comes to a tavern, where he hears the sounds of merriment and laughter. He decides that if he can't be happy no one can and slaughters everyone in the tavern. After wandering through many places he finds Annabel's killer, "The Thespian". He tries to kill himself. At the end of the story The Artist finally comes face to face with him to fight to the death. He is stabbed in his side with a dagger and finds himself in a room with Annabel holding a bloody dagger in hand. From here on the story's point of view switches from The Artist to Annabel where she explains that The Artist had slowly been sinking into madness all this while, as he became more and more withdrawn and his sketches more and more violent. Though she loved him, in the end she had to take his life in the attempt to defend herself from him.

History: when she was three, her mother died in an accident. her father tried his best to raise her but he couldn't look at her without being reminded of his dead wife, so he handed her off to his brother and his family. she has never seen him since, nor does she care.
Other: she has a thick English accent and she loves to draw. she's an amazing singer and she loves to play violin and piano. she has been the Artist's lover for four years and she still loves him, but he is starting to scare her.
Personality: she has a sharp tongue and a hot temper if you get her mad. she doesn't "forgive and forget". it's not in her vocabulary. neither is self-pity. she is violent if you mess with her or her friends. she's blunt and oblivious and she has no filters in her head. if she thinks it, she says it.

I was watching him draw quietly, humming softly. I had my arms around his neck.
"What are you drawing, honey?" I asked him, not really sure what it was at the moment.

"sun set"

Annabel:
"Um, ok. Are you hungry? Do you need anything?" I asked, slowly letting go of him. I didn't know why he withdrew from me. Its been happening a lot lately.

"no thank you... im good"

Annabel:
I sighed and sat down on the bed. I brushed my hair back from my face and watched him, a bit sad. The sunset picture had to be the happiest sketch he's drawn in a while. The others have been all blood and gore. I lightly touched my white nightgown out of nothing better to do.

I kept drawing

Annabel:
"Devin, its getting late...." I said quietly, a few hours later. I looked at him and stood up hesitantly.

I put down my pencil

Annabel:
"Do you hate me?" I asked him softly, looking down.

"no" i said looking at her

Annabel:
"Then why do you act like it?" I asked him.

"withdrawls at times"

Annabel:
"Come to bed, its late," I whispered and put a hand on his shoulder.

I nodded

Annabel:
I kissed his cheek softly and sat on the bed.

I sat

Annabel:
I kissed him softly, wondering if i should.

Kisses back slightly

I lay down, still kissing him.
