My eyes followed him as he moved away. After a long minute of staring at the floor, thinking my options through, I moved over to the scanner he had indicated. "I'm ready," I said, to call his attention. If I had to do this to be able to go back home, then I would have to do it. As long as they weren't going to hurt me, or dissect me, I could cooperate.

Oh I heard her, I chose to ignore her however, switching from the machine I was working with and a pad of paper beside it. She wanted to make a big deal about doing this at her pace then by god I'd do it at my pace as well. It was petty, I was bitter, but so it was. I wasn't playing here, I wasn't going to get into a pissing contest. She either worked with me and we possibly had a chance to get her home. Or she refused to cooperate and I moved on to other tasks that I'd need to do anyway.

Demi:

I stood there waiting for him for a couple minutes. When it was clear that he wasn’t coming over, I sat down on the floor and hugged my knees. He was a difficult person, but at least he wasn’t a violent or cruel person.

After another few minutes of him ignoring me, I thought I might as well try it on my own. Maybe if he wasn’t watching, his equipment would fail and I would actually be able to make it. If nothing else then I would at least know what to expect when I tried it under his scrutiny.

I got still, my breathing slowed, and I opened my mind. In an instant I felt a strong pressure around my scull and the rest of my body tingled. I gasped and brought my hands up to hold my head.

"Are we done making stupid choices." Her gasp had me turning around and crossing my arms as she held her head. "We can sit here and play stubborn wall versus stubborn jackass all day long and get no where. Or we can play twenty questions where I have to explain how all of this equipment works, how I learned it, and better yet the events in my life leading up to why I'm asking you do perform a simple task. Or we can just assume I have my reasons and the more cooperative you are the better I can help you and eventually the sooner you get to leave."

Demi:

The pressure ceased when I stopped using my power. I rested my forehead on my knees. "I still want to know what is going to be done to me. That as all I asked. You were the one wasting time using terms I didn't understand," I said quietly, still in my compact form on the floor.

Sighing I moved over to stand by the machine. "Box has camera, camera see's inside you, shows pictures of what your body does." I touched a hand to my chest. "I look at pictures and compare them. Look for anything funny, or different." The entire time I 'explained' what I was going to be doing my voice had the same tone one would have when talking with a child.

Demi:

I lifted my head up to glare at him with narrowed eyes. "Are you always such a prick? I would wonder if it was a cultural thing, but everyone else I've met was perfectly nice, even when they don't have to be. So what's your problem?" I snapped.

"It's how I make it through the day. Some people need coffee, others need love, I have to be an asshole. The world just wouldn't be right if I wasn't." I didn't really want to be seen as a prick. But if the glove fit and it prevented problems in the future then I'd roll with it.

I frowned at him as I stood up. "Just do what you have to do," I muttered, standing in the machine. I looked away from him, studying the rest of the lab instead. I didn't like him.

I hit a button and the machine came to life. It made a serious of clicking noises and within a minute it was done. "Basics done." I stepped away from the machine and grabbed a paper cup, a pair of pills and even went so far as to fill the cup with water. Bringing them back I settled down in front of the machine and tapped a few buttons. "Again please, if you can stomach the pain long enough. If not we will do it some other time."

Demi:

I swallowed and did as he asked. Again the pressure in my skull was strong and it spread to the rest of my body in a mix of tingling and burning. I let it go and put a hand to my forehead. I felt drained after not much work. The pressure was gone, but in it's place I had a dull headache

I took the images while she did the event and after she was done I sent them off to be compiled for later. Turning off the machine after that was done I gathered up the pair of pills and the water cup. Moving over to the girl I offered both out. "Pain killers, for the headache and general aches. Water for taking the painkillers."

DemiDemi:

I took the cup of water and sipped it, but eyes the painkillers. “I’m not in that much pain,” I said, a partial lie. I was weary of any kind of drug after spending the first few days on this world drugged to the point of docileness.

"Take them or don't. It's up to you." I shrugged and set them down on the counter. Turning away from her I went over to the computer and sat down on the stool in front of it. Pulling up the images I began to compare them.

Demi:

I stood there for a couple minutes then followed him uncertainly. "What do I do now?" I asked. I didn't know what time of day it was, only that I had two meals already. Was it bed time? My sleep schedule had been ruined by the overdose of sleep this past week. My body had enough.

"Most normal people would be getting ready for bed right now. It's nearly nine in the evening." Rubbing a hand along my stubble I tapped a few buttons and an imagine machine began printing out the slices I'd requested. After a minute or so I grabbed up the quintet of images and brought them to the light bar, putting them across so I could see the images like they were x-rays. "You mind grabbing me one of the markers from that cup there?" I waved at the metal cup sitting beside the imaging printer.

Demi:

I hesitated but I got the marker for him then hovered close by. “What are you doing?” I asked, looking over the pictures he had laid out. My eyes were drawn to the ones that showed my bones. They looked hollow. My wings were folded in back, slightly obscuring my spine.

"Trying to tell difference in activity. The skeleton wouldn't likely show much. But I grabbed it during you trying to use your powers anyway. What I'm looking for mostly is changes in your brain. Haven't you ever wondered how you can use your gift? How can you fly? What makes this all possible. Think about birds. They manage to fight gravity and fly. No amount of flapping of my arms makes that possible and even if I had wings your size I still wouldn't be able to get off the ground. My body is simply too heavy. But you..." I tapped her x-ray. "You have hollow bones."

Demi:

I had known that, hadn’t I? I knew I was lighter than other girls my same size because I had wings. “That’s how my mom is,” I said. I got it from her. My ears laid back at the thought of her and my dad. I missed them…

"Must be a genetic trait. Can I ask what kind of bird your mother....was part of?" I knew nothing about birds or their structure. I made a note to look it up and study into the subject. "It likely won't matter to my study but perhaps the mix of dna....hm..." I trailed off and stared into space, arms folded and pen tapping on my chin.

Demi:

"Peacock," I answered with a small frown. My wings twitched and rustled. "She's more than that though. She never fully knew all the parts of her DNA mixture. So I don't really know what I am either..."I pursed my lips.

"We could find out you know." The offer simply slipped out of me. "Human DNA and animal are vastly different and while you can find similarities and I'm sure some coding and sequencing will overlap we might be able to find out your full mix with some degree of error." Moving over to the images I made a few circles on them of minute differences. I'd go through later and check to make sure it wasn't just something benign.

Demi:

“How could you find that out?” I asked. I hugged my arms to my body, pretty sure I knew. But it was a tempting thought, to be able to fully know what I was. Then again, he would have that information too. I didn’t know what flipping that rock could bring.

"I take a strand of hair or two, run it through my machines, it tells me your genetic code. I could use blood or something else. But if you are anything like Veronica you shed worse than any cat." My eyes never left the images.
