Perfect Assassins

Eventually, Lexi fell into a restless sleep. She hadn't slept very well the night before.

Krissy:

“Kyle?” I asked softly after a while of listening to the radio. “What?” He replied, I could tell from his tone that he was still annoyed. I sighed. “Never mind.” “No Krissy, what? Just say.” I shook my head and just looked out the back window.

Lexi's eyebrows furrowed in her sleep and she made a small noise but didn't wake up.

Kyle:

I pulled up to a gas station a while later. “You hungry?” I asked Krissy through the window as I pumped it. “Nah, I’m a little carsick.” She said tiredly.

Lexi woke up with a small jerk and looked around, eyes wide before settling down. She didn't speak, knowing she didn't have to. Her nightmares always got more frequent when they knew someone was after them. Always.

Kyle:

I sighed. “Lexi are you hungry?” I asked seeing her wake up. I frowned.

Lexi didn't even register that he was talking to her for a moment then frowned, thinking about it. "Uh..I think so. Yeah, I am," she mumbled.

Kyle:

“Then we can get something to eat. Anything sound good?” I asked. “I’m not hungry.” Krissy said dully. “Then you don’t have to eat.”

"You're going to eat, Kris, if I have to shove it down your throat," Lexi turned in her seat, giving her a look that meant, argue with me and I'll stab you.

Krissy:

I glared back at her. “I’m not hungry. I am not eating. I feel carsick.” I said flatly sitting up on my elbows.

"I hear nothing but the tinkling of bells," Lexi replied, getting out of the car. "I'm getting food, you're going to eat and not argue with me. End of story." She slammed the car door shut and walked inside, looking for food.

Kyle:

“I’m not eating it!” Krissy shouted after her as I pulled the car away from the pump and closer to the store. I started to get out of the car when Krissy spoke, “Tell her not to get me anything. Kyle really, I’m not hungry.” I turned back to look at her and saw her eyes glossy with tears. “Krissy, what’s the matter? I know you don’t get carsick.” I said gently. She didn’t look at me. “Krissy?” I asked as a tear rolled down her cheek. I sighed again and got out of the car before climbing in the back seat with her. I hugged her and she wrapped her arms around me sobbing into my shirt.

Lexi got some food, trying to be healthy but the best kind of healthy thing you could get at a gas station was a sub lathered in mayo. She sighed, buying some subs, bottles of water, and even a Monster, knowing they would need the energy before heading back to the car.

Kyle:

I held her, letting her cry herself out. She hadn’t done this in years. I rubbed her back gently. I assumed she was upset over the phone call, probably about losing Jack, and Michael being gone.

Lexi climbed back into the car and looked at Kyle, knowing that he would figure out that she knew what was going on and why her best friend was crying.

Kyle:

“What’s wrong?” I mouthed to Lexi as I handed her the keys so she could drive and I could stay in back with my sister.

Lexi shrugged and climbed into the driver's seat, setting the food into the passanger's seat as she pulled out and onto the main road.

Kyle:
Krissy finally cried herself into a silence then eventually fell asleep in my arms. “What’s going on?” I asked Lexi in a whisper.

"I don't know," Lexi lied, shrugging again as she drove.

Kyle:

“You honestly think I’ll believe that? She tells you everything.” I said as I leaned back in my seat.

"Not always," Lexi replied then shrugged. "It's not really my place to say. Ask her."

Kyle:

I looked down at Krissy. “She won’t say. Come on Lex, she’s my little sister, I have the right to know what’s going on with her.”

"I also have the right to remain silent," Lexi replied. "And you'd kill all of us." She mumbled the last part.

Kyle:

“And I’d what?” I asked leaning forward a little unable to hear her over the sound of driving.

"I just said that we should probably stop soon. We've been in the car awhile now," Lexi replied, quickly changing the subject.
