Emily:

I followed along close to Everett watching looking all around us, hyper sensitive to any sound. Our car had finally sputtered out of gas a mile back and we had yet found a suitable place to spend the night. The sun was fading though, and it would be dangerous to be out of the road in the dark, and even more so if we used out flashlights. There was a country road ahead with several houses, I assumed he was leading us there.

Everett:

I checked the road ahead through the scope of my rifle, keeping my breath slow and steady. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, which simply meant no zombies in sight. I stood up from my crouch and smiled at my sister. "Come on, soon we can relax in a house and rest for a while." I said trying to be reassuring.

Emily:

I gave a weak smile back and readjusted my back pack on my shoulders, they were beginning to ache. “Until we get another car?” I asked quietly.

"Or gas for the other one. I know how you loved the color." I teased. I caught sight of her adjusting her pack and I paused. Wordlessly taking her backpack off her shoulders and slipping it on in front of me while pressing a bottle of water into her hands. That done I started walking again as if nothing had changed.

Emily:

I sighed softly. I tried to be tougher than I was, tried to hide my weaknesses to him, but he seemed to notice everything. I sipped at the water, not wanting to drink it all until we had another source. “Can we just do this one?” I pointed to the closest house on the road. It was white and all the first floor windows had been boarded up, but it looked completely vacant. There was no car in the driveway, and the grass was tall and showed no signs of tire marks.

I looked at the house for a moment considering it. "Sure, why not." I nodded and began to slowly head that way, bringing my rifle up as I crept towards the tall grass and ultimately the house.

Ari:

I slowed down as I passed an abandoned vehicle on the side of the road. I surveyed the area for a moment then stopped, leaving the engine on my motorcycle running just in case. I moved towards the car and looked into it, not really expecting to find anything but willing to try anyway. The keys were still in the ignition and I tried them, only to find what I suspected. Gas was empty. I shrugged it off, turned off the car then hopped back onto my motorcycle. I adjusted the bandanna covering my nose and mouth and then my hat before starting off again.

Emily:

Once we were in the house and found no signs of zombies I relaxed a little. “I’ll check the kitchen for supplies.” I said, moving into the other room and clicking on my flashlight.

Aiden:

I watched the guy on the motorcycle leave before I crept out of my hiding place in the bushes. I had just discovered the car when I heard the motorcycle coming. I popped the engine and began salvaging parts from it. I had already searched the car for supplies and found nothing.

Everett:

I nodded to her, and set our bags down as I checked the rest of the house just for zombies. Satisfied that everything else was empty I checked the windows to see if the wood would hold should the place come under attack. I was brought up short when I heard a vehicle coming.

Emily:

I felt something cold touch the back of my head as I reached into a cabinet. “Don’t move, don’t make a sound, or everything is over.” A dark voice whispered behind me. I froze, doing just as it said. My heart beat short through the roof. I knew Everett would come in here in minutes, he would be able to handle this person, but how could I alarm him without making a sound? “How many people are you with?” The person demanded, grabbing my shoulder roughly and turning me around so I faced the doorway of the kitchen, shielding them. My brain was slow, should I lie and say more? Or tell the truth? Which would do more damage? I felt the hand move the my ponytail and twist it. I gave a small squeak. “How many?” They demanded.

I brought my rifle up, setting the barrel on top of a board to help steady it, while making a platform of sorts with my arm. I focused through the scope the the road jumped into view. On it I saw a figure on a motorcycle, moving steadily towards us.

Emily:

“Last chance.” They hissed. “Two!” I squeaked a little louder than I meant to. I was jerked back and repositioned. I assumed incase someone came through the kitchen door. “What are you going to do with me?” I whispered. They were either going to kill me or not. “Shut up!” They twisted my hair again. I whimpered and saw their hand extend past my face aiming at the door.

The squeak sent chills down my spine and I whirled around, bringing the rifle to bear on the door before slinging it over my shoulder and drawing my side arm. I crept carefully towards the door, debating between calling her name and just staying quiet. I kept my aim on the kitchen door, creeping ever closer.

Emily:

I felt their breath on my neck quicken. My heart was beating so hard and fast that I couldn’t hear anything else. I was scared that they would shoot Everett as soon as he came in to view. But I was also scared that if I did anything to alert him, that they would kill me, and then him. There was nothing I could do, but hope for the best.

Kathrine:

I held the girl close, using her as a shield. There was nothing more I could do. I couldn’t make an escape, not with Elijah hidden in the cupboard. And this girl would surely squeal the instant she was out of danger. I held my gun steady, aimed at head height waiting for someone to come through the doorway.

"Emily? Either say something or I Am going to assume you are with a threat." I called out, pausing in the hallway with my pistol aimed at the door.

Emily:

“Say you’re fine.” The person hissed in my ear. “I’m fine!” I called a little shrilly. “I thought I saw a mouse.” I added, hoping he would know something was wrong. I loved animals, and I had never been afraid of them.

"Who ever you are, you have one last chance. Let my sister go and we can work this out, we mean you no harm. But if you hurt my sister, I will bring all of my training upon you. I was a medic in the U.S. military, I will hold true to my word." I called loudly, recognizing instantly that she was in trouble. Emily loved animals, sometimes to the fright of her parents when she had no qualms about playing in the woods back home where it was known that bears lived.

Kathrine:

My heart picked up. I didn’t let the girl go, but I twisted her hair a little. “I don’t trust people I cant see.” I called back, trying to stay calm, While the girl seemed useless, I was still outnumbered, and there could have been more than them. I wasn’t going to give up my one advantage just yet.

Everett:

"And I was trained not to go into rooms with armed assailants. Lets compromise, I don't want my sister hurt. I'm sure you don't want to be hurt. What is it you want?" I called, keeping my gun trained on the door.

Kathrine:

I couldn’t trust these people. No matter what, I couldn’t trust them. But my back was against the wall. “I just want to be left in peace. But I can’t trust you to just leave. I need to be able to-“ I cut off as I heard a soft but sharp wail from Elijah hidden under the counter. It wasn’t a fussy cry, it was a wounded cry. My heart was instantly torn. I had to get him, bet then that would make us completely vulnerable.
