University Roommates (Restart)

Emily:
I giggled. "No. I just like TV shows and it would be cool to be in one," I said. "What I really want to do is publish a full length novel and not just a kids book." I said. I never told anyone that I write kids books. I used a pen name and no one needed to know. But drunk Emily has no filter.

Ashton:

“You write? Kids books?” I asked, fully facing her now. I was curious about it. She struck me as a lazy sort, not as an imaginative writer. I imagined that the sort of person who wrote kids books got up early and went to the park to work, not sat around on the couch.

Emily:
I turned my head to face him and nodded, my face heating up slightly. "Uh, yeah. Rabbit and Race car...." I said. I had written about 12 books in the series and they were pretty popular. I wouldn't have expected him to know anything about kids books. I shrugged. "Yeah...that's what I do." I said, awkwardly.

Ashton:

“That’s cool,” I said, turning my eyes back tot he screen. “Most people don't ever accomplish what they want to do, some don't ever even know what they want to do.” A small crease had formed between my brows as I looked, unseeing, at the TV.

Emily:
I looked at him and frowned. I reached out and touched his arm. "You know, I think when it comes to finding out what you want to do, sometimes its easy to overthink it. And some people waste so much time looking for what theyre supposed to do. But when they stop looking, it finds them," I said.

Ashton:

“Too many things have found me that I never wanted to do,” I murmured. I slouched down onto the couch, closer to her. Her hand felt warm on my arm, it was an appreciated gesture.

Emily:
I used my fingers to trace little patterns on his arm. "It's not like you've tried everything. Do you know how many things there are to do that people will pay you for? It's ridiculous actually." I joked.

Ashton:

My skin prickled under her touch. I looked down first at her hand then at her face. Our conversation fizzled out of my brain to be replace by nothing but her. I forced my eyes back to the screen and sighed deeply.

Emily:
I heard his sigh and looked at him. I nudged him. "Hey. Get out of your own head. Things have a way of working out," I said. I felt more sober than I had all night long and I was serious. Whatever he worried about, he shouldn't be.

Ashton:

"Maybe," I said. If I was any kind of decent I would have brought her her home, made sure she was okay, then left her alone. Yet I had given into weakness again and this time I didn't know what I could do to deter her.

Emily:
"Don't say maybe." I demanded. "Say, 'yes Emily, everything is gonna work out'" I told him. I nudged him again and raised my eyebrows. "Come on, say it"

Ashton:

"Everything is going to work out," I said blandly. I glanced sideways at her. "Why does it matter anyway?" I asked.

Emily:
"I don't know why it matters," I said. I took my hand off him and crossed my arms over my chest. I had almost forgotten that we weren't friends. Why would it matter to me if he was going through something?

Ashton:

I sighed again and put the side of my head in my hand leaning against the armrest. "Drink your water Emily, it will help you recover," I told her dully, she had only had half the glass I brought her.

Emily:
I stared at the TV, not even sure what part of the movie we were up to. "I'm not thirsty," I said, maybe being disagreeable because I was still a little mad at him.

Ashton:

"You need to re-hydrate yourself. Otherwise the alcohol with stay in your system and you'll be regretting life in the morning. Trust me," I warned her. I knew she was being contrary in spite of me. "You didn't even finish the grilled cheese."

Emily:
"I'm not really sure why you care about how i'll feel in the morning," I said. I bit my lip and shrugged. "You didn't care how I was feeling a few hours ago," I said, trying to keep my voice nonchalant.

Ashton:

"I care about you Em," I said softly with a quick glance over her face, she wasn't looking at me. "I just don't care about what happens to me." Immediately after I said it I hoped that she was too drunk to think much about it, or remember it in the morning.

Emily:
"You can't push me away and say you care about me all in the same day!" I exclaimed. I turned on the couch to fully face him "You have to make up your mind, you can't do both!" I said. "And-and I don't care if you don't care what happens to you," I rambled. "Because I care! And I don't care if you think that makes me stupid. That means you can't do stupid things!" I said, not even sure if I was making sense. "And if you tell me to fuck off one more time, I swear to God, Ash..." I trailed off and without thinking leaned over and pushed him.

Ashton:

I winced at her words but didn't put up a fight. Even when she shoved me I didn't attempt to block her, which was my first instinct. "Why bother with me? I've treated you like shit. Why are you still wanting to be my friend? I would have given up a week ago if I were you," I said. I leaned away from her in case she was prone to more violence.

Anna:
"Because regardless of what you say, I dont believe youre being an asshole just for the sake of being an asshole. I think there's something else going on. And friends are supposed to be there for you. So that what im trying to do." I told him. I shook my head and sighed. "But I wont do it for much longer. Im not gonna let you talk to me like that anymore." I said, frowning. "But I'm sorry I pushed you." I finished with a mumble. "Im still a little tipsy."

Ashton:

I listened to her with a frown. "I'll only get you in trouble. Nothing good will come from having a friend like me," I said honestly, but I leaned closer to her after she apologized for pushing me.

Anna
"Well you dont get to choose my friends for me" I said, calming down. "Thats my descion." I said.

Ashton:

I was at a loss. I didn't know what I could do anymore, or if I should continue spending time with her. She would only get hurt if she was close to me. I sighed and turned my attention to the screen once more. This whole time I had only taken in about five minutes of the movie.

Anna:
I sighed and shook my head. "Youre the most stubborn person i've ever met. And usually thats what people say about me," i said.
