Perfect Assassins

Krissy:

“Krissy no!” I heard Kyle call after me but I was already following Eric. I got outside and the porch light turned on. “Eric wait, please wait.” I called after him as he loaded his bag in the trunk.
I sniffled as he walked up to me slowly. He was calm. Really calm. “I’m sorry I snapped at you Krissy. I just can’t stand this anymore. I have to get away from this.” He said quietly. I sighed heavily but nodded. I wiped my tears away with my sleeve then held out my arms. “Can we say goodbye like friends?” I asked softly, giving him a small smile. He hesitated then stepped forward and hugged me tightly. After a second of holding on to him tightly, I pulled back a little to look at his face. That’s when he pressed his lips firmly to mine and his hand brushed my hip. I instantly tried to recoil, bracing my hands on his shoulders to push back. But I was paralyzed by the shock of feeling a blade slide effortlessly into my belly. Everything dulled except for the pain in my belly, twisting and throbbing against the cool metal.
I guess he stopped kissing me because I heard his voice whisper in my ear. “It’s better this way, Krissy. You know I’m right. I’m saving you.” And then he was gone. I was vaguely aware of seeing his taillights as he drove away.
I don’t know how long it took my mind to start kicking in, as it was I couldn’t think straight. I finally looked down and touched the hilt of the knife sticking out of my belly. It was the one Jack had given me. I grasped it with my left hand and pulled slowly. I let out a soft cry as it came out and doubled over in pain. The bloody knife hit the ground.

Michael:

I unlocked the many different locks on the safe, moving methodically as I made sure my mind was empty. Inside the safe were four cases. I grabbed them all, carrying them with me and leaving the safe behind, open and empty. I made my way downstairs and then down to the basement.

Kyle:

I knew something was wrong when she fell to her knees. I rushed out the door. “Krissy!” I knelt next to her and pulled her into my lap. She gave a soft whimper of pain as I touched her stomach. I looked at my hand covered in blood and cursed. I scooped her up in my arms and carried her inside. I took her to the kitchen without thinking and laid her on the table. She was too weak with her movements. She had a hand pressed over the wound but she wasn’t supplying enough pressure. I grabbed a medical kit quickly and returned to her side replacing her hand with my own. She moaned in pain.

Michael:

I set the cases in a back room, in front of a large open machine. I left them there then, heading back upstairs. I froze though when I heard a moan of pain. It was a familiar sound, one that I hated to hear, but heard so often.

Kyle:

“Come on Krissy.” I muttered, keeping my voice calm and steady. I lifted her chin and stuck a dropper in her mouth and emptied it, it wasn’t enough liquid for her to choke on, but she coughed anyway. Her lips had little specks of blood on them. I cursed, but focused on the wound I could take care of. I peeled her bloody shirt up to her ribcage and put gauze on her wound to sop up the blood. I took it off to examine the stab. “Son of a bitch twisted it.” I hissed before reapplying pressure and digging in the medical box one handed.

Michael:

I stepped into the kitchen already dreading the worst. Seeing Krissy on the table, and blood on her stomach, made my fears reality. I wordlessly went over, brushing her hair off of her head, the other hand resting on her shoulder.

Kyle:

As soon as Michael showed up I grabbed his hand and placed it over Krissy’s wound. Keep pressure of that. And I’m going to need you to hold her down in a second.” I said without looking at him. I dried my hand on a cloth before preparing a few things. “What? Why? Kyle…” Krissy muttered weakly, roused by what I had said.

Michael:

I obeyed instantly, willing to do anything to help her. I put a finger to her lips to shush her before leaning down and giving her a quick kiss.

Kyle:

“Hold her still.” I ordered. Suddenly she had strength enough to try to resist. “No, Kyle, What are you going to do?” She moaned.

Michael:

I held her upper half, as that is all I had reach to do.  I hesitated a moment before climbing up onto the table, laying down next to her and hugging her.  I moved my legs to wrap around hers, it was an awkward way to lay for me, and Kyle would have to work from the side now, but she would have a hard time to struggle.  But I hoped I could whisper into Krissy's ear and just distract her.

Kyle:

She stilled a little when he laid down next to her but she kept her green eyes on me.  She strained to see what I was doing then started to struggle against Michael feebly.  I mixed the powder quickly then painted it on the ripped skin.  She let out a sharp cry and tried to kick free.  She stopped after a moment once the wound was cauterized.  Her eyes glazed over and her breathing was labored.  I pulled out my phone immediately.  “Don’t let her fall asleep.”  I ordered before dialing the number and leaving the room to make hurried arrangements.

Michael:

"Talk to me baby, please." I whispered softly to her. I stroked her cheek, turning her head to face mine.

Krissy:

I tried to focus on him but everything was so muddled. I was used to pain, but somehow this seemed different. I held my breath to keep from letting out another soft moan of pain.

Michael:

"Hey, hey come on say something, keep breathing and just talk. We need to pick a name you know. We never chose one. How does Steve sound?" I said, chatting aimlessly, just hoping to get a response.

Krissy:

I let out a soft pained breath. “Steve? Really?” I mumbled. “You assume it’ll be a boy.” I put a hand on my belly, over the ruined skin and winced in pain.

Michael:

"Billy then? Billy can be both a girls name and a guys." I teased gently, kissing her cheek as a sort of reward for speaking.

Krissy:

“You want our baby to have a redneck name?” I mumbled trying to focus on him.

"What a wonderful idea, I am glad you thought of that!" I teased gently.

Krissy:

I sighed in response it was getting harder to breathe, I felt like I was running out of oxygen seconds after I took in a breath.

"Billy bob? Or billy ray?" I asked her, attempting to get something out of her.

Krissy:

I stopped trying to hear him and his voice became blurred. I didn’t have a firm grasp on what was happening. I felt like I was running from something, I was out of breath from it.

Kyle:

Once the arrangements were made I went back to Krissy. She was completely out of it. I grabbed her wrist and turned it over to pinch the soft skin with my fingernails. She gave a little start. “Ow, Kyle.” She mumbled. I smiled a little. I just had to keep her save until they got here.

Michael:

I was still laying next to Krissy, though I wasn't sure I was helping anymore.

Kyle:

By the time the helicopter got there Krissy was in bad shape, she wouldn’t answer when we spoke to her, and she wasn’t moving on her own. Not even a twitch when I pinched her. Three guys came in to prepare her for transport. Michael and I were unable to go with them because it would weigh the helicopter down and slow it too much when time was so valuable.

Michael:

I watched the helicopter take off, my hands at my sides, and my face a mixture of pain and longing. I didn't know what I could do to make this better.

Kyle:

I grabbed my keys and went to my car. “You coming?” I asked Michael, my voice very calm.
