School of Thought

I nodded and let my eyes wander the party, oblivious to his gaze on my body.

Krista downed her drink and encouraged Felicia to do the same then dragged her out into the mass of bodies dancing to dub step.

I felt a little off after finishing my drink but the energy of everyone dancing drew my attention away from my body's problems.

I blinked at the drink and took a small sip at it before perking up. "Soda! Danny doesn't let me have some usually."

Krista chuckled.  "You can have and do whatever you like when you're with me baby girl."  She said with a little wink and took a box out of her pocket. She slid a cigarette between her fingers and lit it.

"Why do you think he does it though?" I asked as I kicked my feet.

"He's your big brother, and your guardian.  It's his job to do things like that." Krista said with a shrug.

"Oh...well that makes sense." I said as I kept sipping at my drink.

Danny:

We went to an Oriental restaurant where we sat on cushions on the floor and ate at a little table.

Kohl:

I sat with my back straight and my posture submissive and slightly tensed. I wasn't sure what to say or do, so I kept my eyes on the table and kept glancing up at him.

Danny:

I ordered some hot tea in a cast-iron pt then turned my eyes to Kohl.  "So, how many...  how many people have you...  helped?"  I asked.  I was trying not to use words that would be offensive, like masters, or served.

Kohl:

"Do you mean how many masters have I served?" Amusement twinkled in my eyes. "Its not offensive to call them that. And..." I paused and tilted my head. For a time my golden eyes were unfocused before I came back from my thoughts and gave my answer. "One hundred and forty seven. There are times where more than one person tells me what to do. But I always know who my master is. It might seem like a lot but...I'm rather old and some times I switched masters by the minute as people fought and died in a family war."

Danny:

"Is it hard for you?  Goping to someone new?  Do you miss your former..  Masters?"  I asked softly.

"Sometimes...I liked some of my masters...the nice or sweet ones. But then there are ones I don't want to look at or think about..." I shuddered and shook my head as some of the bad ones ran through my mind.

Danny:

"Can't you be...  Set free or something?"  I asked, I might have asked the question before but I still didn't understand why he had to do this.  I didn't want him to have to serve me.

"No." I replied as around my wrists glowing metal bands with runes carved into them appeared. Under the table around my ankles they came as well. "I am a Djinn. My punishment is eternal servitude. If I was a genie then perhaps I could have been."

Danny:

"So then, service never ends for you?" I was angry at the idea. "There must be something that could be done to free you. When does it end?"

The table was small so I was able to put one hand on his arm and grab his chin between my thumb and pointer finger to make sure he was looking at me. "Daniel...this is my life." My eyes filled with all the years I had seen and both the good and bad I had experienced. "I know of only one way to end my service...I serve until I die. But it doesn't have to be a bad time serving. You are my master, how good or bad this service to you is defined by what you do."

Danny:

I sighed softly.  "Maybe we should talk about something else."  I suggested.  I felt helpless about the situation, even if I did the best for him I could, made him as comfortable as possible, he would still have to live this life after me.

"Then what do you think your sister is doing hm?" I asked lacing my fingers together to create a platform to rest my head on.

Danny:

"Having fun I hope.  Not doing anything bad.  I think Krista will watch out for her though.  She would do anything for my little sister I think."  I said with a little nod.

"You trust your friends that much?" I asked with a soft smile. "They must be quite the amazing people. "

 

"I'm jealous, they sound like interesting people! I'm glad they helped you be who you are..." I trailed off shyly my golden eyes dropping to the table.
