Boarding School for the Mythical

Vivian:

"And if it will give him happiness?" I asked him with the tilt of my head.

Velaric:

“There are plenty of girls.” I said flatly. “Not all of them have the power to hurt him like she does. She’s bad news.”

I looked up at him. "I can hurt him. Destroy him. I nearly did a long time ago...though in my defense, he did try to kill me too."

Velaric:

I looked at her a moment before deciding to let it go. Sphinx had known many people before my great-grandparents were even thought up. “Well things are different now. That thing is poison.” I said harshly.

Vivian:

"Sphinx and I put it where it is. I know what it is, where it came from, what it can do, and how to remove it." I said with a shrug.

~Flash Back Seventeen Years~

The elf stared at the metal box in the center of the table.  He had been there alone for days in the underground vault.  He had come to a solution.  A solution that he knew was morally wrong, but it was the only option.  One life was the price for many.  Any moment the girl would be there and her fate would be bound to that which inhabited the box in the center of the table.  The elf, Jensen, closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair.  The power within the box would be released soon, the containment spell had only been strong enough to hold it for five thousand years.  And the five thousandth anniversary was coming up in weeks.  Jensen had been devoted to finding a solution for the last decade with the help from the others who had sealed the evil away.
The power was so intense that it had taken a dozen of the oldest most powerful beings to seal it away in the box.  While it was the truest form of evil, it was also the truest form of power, both good and bad. The being, referred to as Pandora, had wreaked havoc on the world.  For so long it had destroyed cities, and tortured innocents.  It had taken decades for the spell to be cast to trap it.  And then it was only a temporary thing.  
Jensen had found a way to possibly remove the threat of Pandora.  There were too few creatures old enough and powerful enough to trap it again.  But it could be bonded to another living creature.  And if that creature was pure enough, it could deactivate the powers of Pandora.  It was a gamble.  If the creature was not pure enough, Pandora would take over and be powerful once more, however, if it was bound to a mortal body, it’s powers would be limited.  
Jensen had found the one, the most innocent being.  Pure and young, and loved more than anything by her family.  She was also a magical creature, so her own powers would hold that of Pandora’s at bay.  Once he had discovered the child Jensen knew that was the only option.  
Others disagreed with him.  Some thought they could destroy it.  Others thought it could be turned into a force of good rather than evil.  But Jensen knew this could not be done.  He knew without a shadow of doubt that his option was the only one that would safe them the devastation of Pandora.  It was not a power that could be transformed, or destroyed.  
“She will be here soon, as should Sphinx.”  Jensen said coolly.  He looked up at Vivian.  “You will see, this is the best.  This child, it’s the one I’ve been waiting for.  She can contain Pandora, it won’t ever be a problem again.”  He told her, reaching for the hand of the phoenix.
“You say that like it is fact, yet it is nothing more than a theory.  Pandora could overtake the child, destroy it among with the rest of us.  Furthermore, what happens when this mortal dies?  Pandora will be released again!”  The fae among them spoke out.  Jensen sighed.  It was a theory, But he believed in it more than anything.  
“When the mortal dies that Pandora will die with it.”  He said for the umpteenth time.

Vivian:

"I must ask though, What about the girls choice in this?" I asked my voice rasping. I leaned on my staff, my old and wrinkled face showing my years. I tapped it on the floor, easing myself into my chair. "Is it alright for us to thrust this upon her?" I slid into a seat with a heavy sigh. I kept my hands on the staff though, running my hands over the aged wood.

The elf sighed and looked at her. “We do not have the luxury of finding just the person to be able to do this, and be willing. The girl is the perfect candidate. However, she has no knowledge of what will be done to her. She is only an infant after all, barely able to walk on her own. Even if someone were to explain… She couldn’t understand.” He told her.

Vivian:

I looked at him, giving him the full weight of my gaze and the power behind it. "Are you going to take responsibility if things don't go as planned? If she decides she doesn't want to do this anymore? Will you come and explain to her? My vote still stands on finding a way to make this...thing work for the betterment of all. Why should I change my vote to what you wish? This is a council, not a dictatorship. Though I know others on the council might wish it to be so. The vote must be taken. Reassure me that you will take the steps required if things go wrong, and my support will go to your plan. Fire willing, it is more logical than Sphinx's."

I paused and closed my eyes, "He could do it you know. I have seen what his kind can do if they put all of their power behind it. It will consume him, and likely most of what is around him. But he could cripple the thing enough that it would never be able to do anything." I opened my eyes to look at the elf again. "His plan has a higher chance to work. And it is more popular right now than yours. Sell me on your plan."

Jensen Sighed deeply. “There is not enough time for anything else. My plan is the safest, most reasonable one. And if all works out, it could accomplish all three of our options. It will subdue the power. It could possibly be used through the girl to do good. And when she dies, it will die with her.” He said

Vivian:

"No time to discuss? Please. You have until you seal the thing away in the girl to explain it to me. If I don't like your reasoning. I will incinerate the girl. Jensen be reasonable. You are asking everyone to trust you, but you refuse to explain yourself. I am your last chance before the council decides to remove you and just take Sphinx up on his offer." I said, my voice serious.

“What more do you want to know?” Jensen asked tiredly.

"I already told you my questions." I told him with a soft smile. I reached over and patted his hand. "I mean you no trouble Jensen. I do wish your plan to succeed. It will cause a lot less needless deaths, but I also am not afraid to put an end to it."

“Nothing can be done if she decides she doesn’t want to do it anymore…” He said, which wasn’t entirely true, the thing could be extracted, but it couldn’t be bound right after, which meant it could only be released. “There is no reason to believe that it will harm her though, when something like this is bound to a host, it tends to protect it rather than harm it. It wants to keep itself alive after all. So it may be a very good thing for her. However, I plan to watch her as she ages, If something does go wrong, I will do everything in my power to fix it.” He explained.

Vivian:

I nodded tapping my staff on the floor absently. My ponderings were interupted however as the doors to the chamber burst open, a lone figure striding through. The fact that he was angry was not lost to anyone looking, as he seemed to be wearing energy around him like a cloak. "What are you doing?" His voice rang out in the silent chamber. "What made you think of this foolish plan? This could have all been done with!"

Jensen grimaced. “With a great loss to the world. My plan only has the potential to harm on.” He said calmly.

"And mine also has the plan to harm only one. I could just as easily do the deed in a human city as I could in the bottom of the ocean. You are placing an innocent in danger! I have lived my life, as long as it has been! I need not see another lifetime!" Sphinx growled, slamming his hands on the table.

The Fae spoke up again. “Don’t be so thick Sphinx, what does one child matter? You have value beyond measure and your skills as well as your knowledge will be missed. There are too few who have lived as long as we have. It does no one any good to throw that away when there is another perfectly acceptable option.” Malachite said, flicking her copper hair over her shoulder. “And do calm down, anger is unbecoming on you.” She spoke very calmly, dismissing his views like he was a child having a tantrum. Jensen waited until she was finished before he spoke. “Doing this will not take her life away. It will only alter it slightly… Regardless, she is a child who has thus far done nothing. Who she will be is still being shaped.” He explained.

Sphinx:

I didn't even look towards the fey as I responded snidely. "If only I cared for the opinion of such shallow folk." My gaze stayed on Jensen as I said softly. "Who is doing the shaping? Her own hand, or yours? Who are you to say what this girl does with her life?"

“Not me, her parents have agreed, and they are in charge of her for now. You can even meet her feather now.” Jensen said, looking toward the door. It opened and a man came in, holding a little girl in his arms. She had on a bright green dress, her ringlet curls hung just above her shoulders, but her eyes were the most striking. They were almost a gold hazel. She looked around at all of us with a curious gaze.

Sphinx:

My face instantly softened and I walked over to the father slowly. I touched the young girls head gently with a soft smile on my lips. "Hey there little one..." I said gently.

Vivian:

I gave a chuckle and patted Jensen's arm. "If you ever wanted to get on Sphinx's good side. Children are a good way to do it. He is fond of them, and they seem to enjoy his company. Though this might make him that much more determined to go against your plan."

The little girl smiled playfully and ducked her head, hiding her face in her father’s shoulder.

Sphinx:

I smiled softly, before creating a box pendant for her. "Here little one, for the cute princess."
