Zombies! (Open)

"I will take first watch." I said softly to the others as I slowly played with Emily's hair.

Kate:

Aiden stretched out on the floor content to let Everett keep watch. “Wake me when you’re ready for a rest.” He said in a yawn. I kept quiet on the floor, I knew at some point Elijah would wake up hungry.

"Yes sir." I said continuing to stroke and play with Emily's hair. "Sleep little sister." I murmured to her before setting my head back against the shelf as I gazed at the dark ceiling.

Kate:

I had fallen into a half sleep by the sound of the other's quiet slow breathing. I didn't know how long it had been, possibly an hour or two, when I felt Elijah waking up on my tummy. He cling to me tighter and made a soft sound. I sat up slowly on my elbows.
It was completely dark.

"Is he alright?" I asked softly into the dark. Her movements had been nearly silent but with very little other sounds it was enough for me to guess she was awake.

Kate:

“Yes,” I murmured sitting up and leaning against the uncomfortable shelf behind me. I looked over to Where I knew Everett was. I could see him which meant he probably couldn’t see me unless he had excellent night vision. “He just hasn’t eaten in a while.” I explained pulling my shirt up on one side. I would have weaned Elisha by now, but having been on the run for months now, sometimes it was hard to feed even myself much less find suitable food for him. I did have food for him in my bag now, but I couldn’t see and this was just easier.

I nodded and let out a soft breath. "You are welcome to go back to sleep if you'd li-." I cut off as my eyes widened and I realized what she was doing. I turned my head away and flushed slightly. "I'm sorry that I'm unable to give you privacy..." I murmured to her.

Kate:

I smiled into the dark as I held Elijah close to me while he nursed. “It really isn’t a problem.” I assured him. “I’m sorry if it makes you uncomfortable.” I added as an afterthought.

"I'm trained as a medic. I have seen things much worse...I just wished I could give you some sort of privacy. A respect thing ma'am." I ran a hand over my face, partially covering my eyes. "May I ask a personal question?"

Kate:

I chuckled a little to myself. “I don’t see why not.” I answered tilting my head back and closing my eyes.

"Is he at an age still where you should be breast feeding him? For that matter...can you still comfortable produce?" I asked, my voice switching to the gentle firmness that I used when dealing with any patient of mine.

Kate:

I was amused by his question. “It would do no harm to either of us if I fed him like this for a few more years. “He’s only two. And I do feed him other things, as much as I can. There isn’t always stuff suitable for him to eat though… thus the reason why I still do this. And yes, I do produce, as long as I continue to do it semi regularly I will keep producing milk. Given that I am properly hydrated and nourished.” I explained. “This is easier when we are on the move.”

I considered her words. "How about nutrients? Are you getting enough?" I wanted to be sure she was healthy and doing alright. Entirely for a medical reasons I told myself, though I knew in the back of my mind it was another way of flirting for me.

Kate:

“As much as any of us are.” I shrugged. “You don’t have to worry over me just because I’m a mother. That doesn’t make me a weak link.”

"It is not being a mother that I worry for you. When we can get back to the car I have something for you to start taking. Vitamins, they will help." I said with a shrug. I kept my hand by my face to give her the best privacy I could.

Kate:

“Thank you.” I said softly, his concern was touching, even if he was doing so from a medical perspective. I felt Elijah fall asleep, even while still nursing. I gently tugged him off and pulled my shirt down. I cradled his sleeping form in my arms.

"Hey better they get used. Military grade does not mean that they are new....but they probably last forever." I said with a soft chuckle. "When he is done you are welcome to go back to sleep if you'd like. I can keep watch for a while yet."

Kate:

“I’m awake now. You can sleep.” I told him. “I don’t feel sleepy anymore.” I shrugged a little even though he couldn’t see it.

"I can't." I said after a long moment. "Sleep does not come easy and what helps me sleep is in the car. One night without sleep won't kill me." I played with Emily's hair again my eyes closing.

Kate:

“Well, then I can keep you company.” I offered with a smile in my voice. I had known him all of two days and I was already fond of him.

I chuckled softly, "Keep me company? I am nothing but a bore. A grumpy old soldier. What on earth would make you want to keep me company hm?" I had amusement coloring my tone and a grin spreading across my lips.

Kate:

I laughed softly. “It is clear from your stories that you are not boring.” I said softly looking over to him though I couldn’t even make out his form.

I grew quiet at that. "They are not stories. They all really happened. And I told only the good ones. Things were not....good over there. War is hell. Always has been...Still is..."

Kate:

“I’m sorry… It must be terrible for you now. You never really got out of it did you?” My voice softened in sympathy.

"No...I'm still at war....Do you know how odd it is to feel that there is no difference in killing humans as it is Zombies? The biggest difference is what I have to patch up after..." I sighed softly. "I left the war zone, happy. I was going home. I was getting away from the darkness that war and combat brings. I don't feel as if I really left. The only bright spot I had was my sister....I might not be here on this world anymore at all if it wasn't for her."
