Adam:

I took the bowl from him and started to leave the kitchen then paused. “I mean no offence by this, but I hope you know that I am not encouraging you to be with her over me…”

"I know. For now...you are no longer a monster. But I always will be one. She is a big girl, she can make her own choices on what she does with her heart." I grabbed another bowl and started to fill it with soup.

Adam:

I had a feeling I knew what she would do. If she got her legs and wings back, she wouldn’t need either of us. I took the soup to her. “Jemma?” I asked as I entered her room. She was curled up on the bed, hugging her limp legs. The scabbed over claw marks on her legs we bloody again and fingernails were the culprit. I sat down on the bed. She seemed to come to quicker than before. She was drenched in sweat now and her expression was raw with pain though it hardened when I came into focus.

“Alex made soup, he sent you a bowl.” I explained. Something flickered in her eyes that I couldn’t catch. “Take me to the couch. I don’t want to be in here.” She said coldly. Even in the state she was in she was making demands. I looked her over. She had blood on her clothes, blood in her hair, blood on her legs. “Okay,” I sighed. I scooped her up in my arms, feeling her flinch away from me even as I did so.

I took her to the couch and set her down gently and handed her the soup. She didn’t look me in the eyes or say another word to me.

I searched the house, checking every room and closet to see what was available. In the end I decided that the place needed to be cleaned. With an exhale that puffed out my cheeks I brushed myself off before starting on the rooms upstairs.

Adam:

I sat down on a foot rest. “You should eat.” I told her, softly. She didn’t look at me or make any move to eat. She was pale, looked exhausted, and sad. She ran one blood crusted hand through her hair then looked down at the soup and started eating. She ate most of it then triet to reach to put it on the table. I let her try a moment longer then I should have then took it from her and set it aside.

“I don’t want you here.” Her words were crisp and firm. “I can’t leave.” I said ruefully. “Why?” She still wouldn’t look at me. I sighed then went on to explain, “Because you can’t be on your own, because I can’t leave you alone with Alex, and because there is no one else here to help you.” She huffed and looked up at the ceiling. After a moment I saw tears coming to her eyes.

“Why do you care?” She demanded, finally facing me with tearful eyes. Her voice was rough and emotional. “Why do you suddenly want to help me? You weren’t there earlier when I needed you! You didn’t help me then! You couldn’t help me when I hurt Ira, you couldn’t help me when I needed you to help Kat! When I needed you, when I would have done anything for your help, you weren’t there!” She was shouting now.

“You think you have to be here to help me now? For what? To keep me from Alex? To keep Alex from destroying me? I don’t care! Let him! I don’t care what happens without you, I don’t want you here!” Her chest was heaving when she stopped shouting.

She shrunk into the couch when I stood up, her eyes looking defensive. “I’m not leaving.” I told her then left her in the living room by herself. I went outside and sat on the porch, out of shouting distance. If I had stayed with her she would only have kept shouting.

Jemma:

I took in a shaky breath. My head was pounding from shouting so loud. I ran my shaky hands through my hair and leaned my head back against the couch. I was alone, that’s what I wanted wasn’t it? So why did it feel so awful? My chest shook with little, uncontrollable sobs.

Alex:

I heard the shouting and I paused mid cleaning. I didn't move at first before creeping downstairs with a broom in my hands like it might be a sword. I advanced into the living room, looking around before pausing and sheepishly bringing the broom close to my chest as I saw Jemma on the couch. I paused for a moment looking over her blood covered form before leaning the broom against the corner of the room.

Jemma:

I looked up to see Alex. I sniffled and wiped my tears away with the back of my hand. “What?” I asked tiredly, I had no energy left to yell at him to. I was so tired.

I blinked at her for a moment. I turned my head away to reach into the shadows. I withdrew a bowl of water and a stack of soft cloths. I moved over and knelt beside her, dipping one cloth into the warm water before reaching out to start cleaning the blood from her nearest arm.

Jemma:

When he started dabbing the wet to my arm I raised my hand quickly and knocked it out of his hand. “Stop it. Just stop. I don’t need you to be nice to me. If I need help I will ask, okay? You don’t need to take care of me.” I said firmly.

Her knocking the cloth out of my hand sent it dropping into the bowl in my lap, spilling that too. I looked down at my wet clothes and only blinked before setting the bowl and the extra cloths aside. I reached into the shadows once more, withdrawing a fresh bowl and more cloths.

Jemma:

I watched him in frustration. It’s like I wasn’t even here, sure he was trying to help me, but I could just as easily have been a statue that he was cleaning off. He didn’t see me.

“Alex say something! Yell at me, hit me, Tell me I’m a monster, do something!” I begged. I couldn’t stand feeling like I was nothing to him.

I set aside the bowl and the cloths and grabbed at her hands. I pinned them above her head in a sudden rush. I brought my face close to hers staring right into her eyes unflinchingly. "You want me to yell at you, hit you, call you a monster. Make me." I said softly. "Get better, get stronger, become the girl you once were. Make me yell at you. Make me hit you. Make me call you a monster....make me fall in love with you once more if that is what you want. Make me leave, make me stay. Make me do what ever it is you truly desire." I took one of her hands to press it over my heart so she could feel it beating. "Until you can make me do something...I wont do it. You can hiss, scream, yell, or beg. I imagine Adam is the same way. So get better Jemma. We....I need you..." I released her wrists and moved back a few inches my eyes still focused on hers.

Jemma:

I had thought he was going to kiss me when he came close. It was so stupid and id made me angry with myself for thinking it, I didn’t even want that right now. I recoiled and frowned at him. I leaned down to grab a cloth from the bowl. “Thank you.” I said quietly, not looking him in the face. I started scrubbing at my hands to get the blood off, both mine and Ira’s.

I sat back and turned my eyes up towards the ceiling. "You do know both of us care about you right? We are trying to do the right thing by you as well as for ourselves. You are strong, willful, beautiful...and so god damn stubborn it is easier to try and move a mountain sometimes...but here we are still. You might not want our help, but right now. You need us. Both of us. I can't be trusted alone with you....I don't want to hurt you." I trailed off and sighed softly.

Jemma:

I looked at him suddenly with cold eyes. “You don’t really believe that bullshit do you? You think he cares about me? He think he actually wants to be a better person?” My tone was venomous. “You don’t know him. He may not have any powers, but that does not mean he is powerless. I’ve never known someone more skilled at manipulation. Whatever he’s said to you, whatever he’s made you think, just know that he is almost certainly playing you.”

"Perhaps...but you don't really know me either...we never had the chance to get to know each other very well." I got to my feet slowly, brushing at the wetspot across the front of my pants with limited success. "You are stronger than you know Jemma. I expect you will be growing all the better pretty quickly. But for now...is there anything I can get you or help you with to try and get you more comfortable?"

Jemma:

“Oh, I know I’m strong.” I said haughtily, dropping my gaze to my arms again. “I’m fine thank you. I just want to be left alone.” It wasn’t entirely true, either statement. I wasn’t fine, and I didn’t want to be alone, but I was strong right? I had to seem that way.

I nodded and gave a slow stretch before sighing at my pants like they were a lost cause. "I will leave you alone then. However...I know how comfortable that couch is. I have slept on it enough. So you are going to have to share. I won't take that much room, and I won't have to touch you." I said, my form shifting till I was a baby fox. I gave my butt a wiggle as I hopped from the ground to have to fight to scramble my way onto the couch. From there I hopped onto the arm rest and then once again had to fight my way to get up on top of the couch. I walked over till I was above her head, circling around and curling into a ball with nose tucked under the tip of my tail.

Jemma:

I watched him curl up then resumed scrubbing my skin. I guess I would allow that. By the time I finished cleaning myself up the water in the bowl was red. I untied the scarf around my chest keeping my wings neatly folded in then glanced at the fox on the couch above me to check if his eyes were open. I peeled the blood crusted top off and cleaned up my chest and belly before I laid down on the couch in my bra. I no longer cared about decency.

I had fallen into a doze right after settling down. I was exhausted. Moving things between this world and the shadow world took its toll on me. The edge of the couch I was laying was slowly sagging down but in my sleep I was oblivious to the movement.

Jemma:

I fell into an actual sleep, though it was swimming in dreams made up of a mishmash of memories, none good ones. I slept for hours locked in new nightmares.

AFter a few hours had passed I tumbled off my perch and onto her shoulder. I gave a small yelp my eyes shooting open as I looked around for what had just happened.

Jemma:

I made a soft sound when I felt him fall onto my shoulder. It would have woken me up if I wasn’t so deeply dreaming. “Mm Michael?” I murmured into my sleep.

I looked at Jemma with wide eyes, my heart constricting in my chest. Michael? She still loved Michael, did she even feel anything for me?

Jemma:

I moaned and buried my face in the couch armrest. Had my wings been working they would have covered me.
