Boarding School for the Mythical

"Well, we are kind of stuck here until they come back... Why don't we, uh, talk about the transfer of power contract thing?" I asked.

I looked at her. "Alright. It can work many ways...contract is a very loose term, some ways bind us together. Other ways is simply a trade of energy."

“Well, what’s the best option?” I asked, “And how long would it last?” I also wanted to know if it would harm me, though I was willing to do it even if it did.

"To be frank I don't know. You have to understand, your power is unique. No one knows how it works, what can be done about it. Nothing. We only know where it came from, and that it as dangerous enough that I was willing to give my life completely to see it removed from this world." I let out a soft breath before looking at her, my hands going over to brush a strand of hair out of her face. "I don't know lots of things. We can start small, start easy. And see what happens from there."

I looked away from him when he started saying it was dangerous. "Okay." I said quietly, looking down at my lap. I was trying to decide if I should say what was on my mind. "I don't want to hurt you. I want to help you, and if giving you some of my power will do that, then I am completely willing. But what if it doesn't help? What if it does hurt you?" I looked up to his face nervously.

"Because there are ways around that. Here, hold up your hand. I want you to try and pool some power in your palm, like it is a liquid." I said demonstrating on my own hand.

“I don’t know about that…” I said uncertainly. I held my hands tightly together in my own lap. “Is it part of the transfer process?”

"It's a way to test it. It will work like this." I moved the power into one hand and with the other I slowly drew power out of the pool and into me. "It takes only a small amount at a time and I can see what your power will do."

After a moment I held my hand out and focused on pooling energy into it. It flowed readily. I wasn’t like my other self. She always had trouble using her powers, for the longest time she couldn’t use any at all, not me.

I let my powers fade until I reached out to place a hand over hers, keeping a foot of distance between me and her. I slowly started to draw up her power, like a mini water spout but I let it go as soon as I had taken a tiny bit of the power. "That is enough for now, I want to see how this works inside me."

"Okay." I said and started to draw my power back. It resisted, instead of going down it flared up and I felt a rush of energy flood my entire body. I gasped.

I reached out instantly, placing a hand on her arm and directing my other hand out. "Push it out, don't let it consume you. Control is everything. You are ruler over the power inside of you not the other way around."

I gave an involuntary moan. I could expel the power, turn it into magic and use it up, but I felt like that’s what it wanted. I had be reel it back it to control it. I was stronger than it, I knew that. That was why they chose me to contain the thing. I doubled over trying to bring it back in. When I finally did I was panting and no longer cold, in fact, I was sweating.

I kept my hand on her arm, doing what I could from the outside to stabilize her. This was her fight however, and I could only look on as she brought it all back.

It took a moment to steady my breathing and straighten up. “I’m sorry.” I apologized softly, running my fingers through my hair.

"And now we know." I said with a nod and a gentle smile. "You did just fine. But I think before you can help...you need to learn control."

I held my face in my hands. “I can control it.” I said, harsher and more defensive than I should have been.

"Then prove it. Do what I asked again." I said softly, patiently.

I looked at him through my hands and frowned. I was done here. I stood up without a word and started walking, back through the light maze. I was going to go wait by the car. Everyone else could meet me there.

I watched her go and let out a soft sigh. "Gods Vel...are we terrible with girls?" I asked the empty air as I shook my head slowly.

The cold returned to me as I walked through the lights. I hugged myself tightly then thought I could do better. Warmth flooded me as well as a rush of power. It felt good, like I had turned on a valve of endorphins. My body was buzzing with power. The lights around me seemed to grow brighter, though I couldn’t tell if they actually were or if it was my interpretation of it. This was my problem. I always had it capped, always had my power turned off. I should have let it out more.

Vivian:

I kept walking heading deeper into the light garden. It was almost welcome when I was grabbed by the arm. I turned, dropping my powers as I was sure it was Velaric but the cold face that met my eyes was not him.

"Well, well, well...what is a little birdy doing out here without her guards hm?" The man snarled menacingly before his other hand went crashing into my temple.

I paused, hearing someone speaking ahead. It could have been Velaric and Vivian making up. And while I was annoyed with both of them for leaving, I didn’t want to interrupt them.

Vivian:

I growled and was on my feet in an instant. I brought my powers up only to have them get shoved down. A lich. The man was a lich, he could suppress my powers entirely. A chill washed through me and I backed up a few steps.

I waited for a minute, listening for the sound of their voices. After a moment I thought about the voice I had heard, it didn’t actually sound like Velaric melodic voice, but it had been a man’s voice. No one else should have been out here. I walked on through the tunnel of lights and turned the corner.

“Hey! Get away from her!” I yelled at the man upon seeing the scene in front of me. I hurried over to Vivian.
