Alex:

Everything seemed to slow down as I stared at Ira's body. I went over and knelt down next to her body. Pulling her into my lap heedless of the blood. Where I touched her the shadows faded. Everywhere else they flared up, dark, angry.

Jemma:

I struggled to get to her but Adam held me back and finally I dropped the knife again. My mind switched gears. “We have to get out. This room is going to burn. It’s going to burn the building down. I have to get Kat and Kai out.” I said brokenly and Adam released me. “She locked us in.” He said, I didn’t question how he knew.

“Get us out.” I said quietly with a glance at Alex. I felt incredibly guilty, and my heart hurt in too many ways. But I couldn’t bring myself to go over to Alex. I knew he could get out on his own.

Adam seemed to hesitate but then he went over to Aline and said something to her that I couldn’t hear. She looked terrified, but she handed him something and he tossed it to me. Keys.

With one last look at the ruined room I took off to the door. There was only one thing I had to do now. I had to get Kai and Kat out of here before the place went up in flames. All else could wait.

Adam:

I stood over Aline looking down at her, she was scared, and in pain. I’d deal with her in a second, but first I had to take care of something else. I moved over to Alex and Ira cautiously. I didn’t know how much Alex knew about me, or what he might try to do.

"How?" I asked as I brushed some hair from Ira's face. The shadows themselves flared up higher as I touched her face.

Adam:

“She was trying to keep Jemma safe… from me. She startled Jemma and she acted on instinct. It was chance that she got her in the throat.” I said gently. “She died quickly. Not a bad death for one of us. She was a good girl, I’m sorry she’s not here anymore, but she can be with Liam now. She can rest.” I crouched down in front of him. “But you can’t stay here with her. She deserves to be buried. She deserves a funeral.”

"She loved me...you know what my history is. And she decided to love me. I was starting to really care about her, something that hasn't happened since my sister." I murmured with a small shake of my head. "Should I just stay? If not for me, she would never have been put into this kind of situation. I could have saved her instead of getting Aline. But I was too drawn into petty revenge."

Kai:

The alarm startled me awake. I scowled around the room. It was empty. Just Kat and me in the bed. I laid back down and hugged Kat to me.

“Kai?” a small voice asked behind me. I thought it was Jemma at first, but it sounded too young. I turned to see a pretty girl with brown hair and wide eyes. She had a young round face but she looked close to our age.

“I need to get you out.” She said coming over to the bed. “I have something to help her, just grab her we need to leave now.”

Adam:

“You lifted her life up at the end. She was miserable before you. She was trapped in her own body. You made her happy before she died, that’s how it was meant to be.” I said.

“Death isn’t sad for the one who dies. It’s sad for the survivors. And there is a girl upstairs who is going to need help through this. She is so much more vulnerable than she gives away. She breaks, and when she breaks it’s hard to put her back together.” I spoke form experience. It sickened me, but I’d seen her break multiple times, and nearly all of them had been because of me.

Jemma:

I ran to Kat’s room and stumbled in. “Kai? Kai!” I shouted when I found the room empty. Kat’s bed covers were tossed aside. There was no sign of them. I clenched my fists. The fire alarm was blaring, maybe Kai had taken her. But I couldn’t imagine he would have taken her off of life support. She would die wouldn’t she? I ran through the halls calling for him. The place was nearly empty. Everyone had evacuated. And Kai and Kat where nowhere.

I closed my eyes tightly. "I want to destroy this whole place...and everyone in it..." The shadows covering me turned writhed angrily before I let out a breath and whispered softly to the girl in my arms. "You are better than I ever deserved Ira. Pure where I am not. I will never forget you I promise." I leaned down to plant a soft kiss on her forehead.

Adam:

The room was becoming too hot to stay in and the smoke was getting thicker. “This place is going to burn, you have to get out.” I said as I got to my feet. There was nothing left to do, if he stayed, if he left Ira here, that was all up to him. I had something more important to do now.

I walked away from him and found Aline close to the door. She had scooted herself nearly there while I had been talking to Alex. I leaned down and pulled her up and then scooped her into my arms. She gave a frightened gasp but otherwise didn’t put up a fight.

I stood and carried Ira's body with me. I wouldn't leave her here. I was going to take her to a place to be buried. A place she would want to be buried at. The place of our first kiss.

Adam:

I helped Aline out of the building. I took her outside and left her there, what she did after that was up to her. Then I went to find Jemma. She was coming in from the courtyard. “I can’t find them, I can’t find them.” She was nearly hysterical. I tried to go to her but she dodged away from me with a look in her eyes that told me I wouldn’t be able to get close to her.

Jemma:

I ran my hands through hair. I felt the tinder spot but the pain was barely even noticeable. Before I went outside I had already checked my room, and Kai’s, but I couldn’t find them anywhere. I ran back down the hall to the rooms to check one last time, that’s when I saw Alex carrying Ira.

“What are you doing? You can’t just take her!” I shouted at him. If I had been in a stable state I might have realized that I had just left her body in the basement without a thought of what would happen to her. But I wasn’t stable right now, I was panicked and hysterical.

Alex:

I used one hand to push open the door to our room. The shadows erupted through the door and it was dissolved till only splinters remained. "I'm just going to get our stuff Ira...then we can get you someplace to rest." I murmured, gently setting her on the bed.

Jemma:

I reached the destroyed doorway breathing heavily with my blood running hot. “Do you think you’re the only one torn up by this? Do you think you’re the only one who cared about her? The only one who knew her? You’re wrong! You were together for two months! You barely even knew her! You don’t know what she was like, you don’t know who she was! I grew up with her! I was her friend! I knew her better than almost anyone else! I loved her! She was like a sister to me! You didn’t even know her!” I was shouting at him and I didn’t even know why. I was so angry, and guilty, and miserable, and it all boiled over at Alex. Maybe deep down I wanted him to shout back, tell me it was all my fault, that I was a murderer, a monster. Maybe I wanted him to avenge Ira and try to hurt me. Maybe all I really wanted was for him to acknowledge my existence. I would rather be a monster to him than be nothing at all. But all I could think about was my white hot fury directed at him.

I moved mechanically gathering up all the stuff into a bag. If the item was hers it wasn't destroyed but anything of mine that I touched was consumed. I barely registered Jemma's voice in my ears. I knew she was angry, I knew it was about Ira. But I couldn't understand why she was yelling at me about it. So I simply didn't care right then why she was unhappy. Once I had all of Ira's things gathered together. I stood by the bed looking down at her still form. I felt tired, exhausted, and very lonely. I didn't know what to do or where to go. "Maybe so..." I murmured softly in the silence after her rant. "But she loved me...and I was starting to fall for her. Now I will never get the chance to see how her face would light up when I finally did and spoke the words. I will never have someone look at me like they care and want to be with me because I defy the odds and make someone happy." I drew in a shaky breath and let it out slowly, the shadows that had still been writhing around me grew still as I let it all go.

"I am a monster..." I shook my head and then looked at her. I saw the warring emotions going across her face, and I looked down for a moment. I crossed the distance between myself and her till I had her in my arms and I was hugging her tightly. Not because she wanted it, not because I wanted it. But because Ira wouldn't want either of us to feel alone or miserable. She was far better of a person than either of us deserved.

Jemma:

My heart was racing, my stomach was in knots, my throat was lumpy. When he hugged me I started shaking and clung to him. I couldn’t stop crying. His words only stung me more.

Adam:

My heart ached just looking at her with him. I wanted to be the one to hold her and comfort her. I was distracted by a loud boom echoing from the other side of the building. The walls shook with the force. “That was the lab, we need to get out of here.” I said.

I held her close rubbing her back between her wings gently. "Shh....it will be alright Jemma. I'm here for you....I wont be going anywhere.....I promise."

Jemma:

An involuntary whimper escaped me when he spoke to me. "We need to go." Adam insisted from behind us but he didn't come closer. I pulled away from Alex a little. "Can you get us out of here?" I asked in a broken horse voice.

I nodded and closed my eyes. I struggled with it but in a few moments a doorway opened on the wall.

Jemma:

I gave a little sniff and started toward the doorway. Going through Alex's shadow world always made me nervous. I turned around to look at Adam. He looked wretched. I'm sure I looked worse. "Come on." I said to him, there was no softness to my voice when I addressed him.

I stretched for a moment before picking up Ira again and carrying her into the doorway.

Jemma:

I stepped into the doorway and out into a deserted park on the lake. The morning sun was only starting to lighten the layer of mist over the area. If we were going to bury her at least it was in an area no people would be in for another few hours.

The adrenalin that had been racing through my veins since I had stabbed Ira started to fade now. I started feeling weak and heavy.

I came out and moved to a small clearing where I laid Ira down gently. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do or say right now. I felt alone, even with people beside me.

Adam:

Jemma moved closer to Alex then seemed to drop gracefully to the ground. Her wings unfurled and draped around her like a brightly colored cloak. I kept my eyes on her as I walked over to Ira's body. "We should do it the traditional way, no powers." I said. Jemma had her hands on the ground in front of her and her head was bowed. Her hair shielded her face and exposed her neck in back. There were little dark flecks in her hair in back that looked suspiciously like blood.

I nodded and with a bit of power I had a pair of shovels sticking into the dirt. I knelt down and put a hand onto the earth. I gripped some dirt in my fist and lifted it up just to watch it slowly slide to the ground.

Adam:

I took hold of a shovel and dug it into the earth. Thankfully it was soft and easy to dig up so it wouldn't take long to dig a hole deep enough. I kept glancing at Jemma as I worked. She was motionless the entire time.

I moved to join Adam my eyes only on the earth as I worked tirelessly, my actions only automatic at this point. The irony at our little group was not lost on me. Adam was the ultimate creation, a product and culmination of the total research done at the school. Jemma was a controller, she could guide Adam and direct him to do the schools bidding. And I was one of their best assassins, and more importantly to them, I could clean up any mess made.
